The 3-Bureau Credit Audit: A Step-by-Step Checklist

How to pull Equifax, Experian and TransUnion free and audit every line for errors lenders spot instantly.
Each bureau keeps its own file. An error deleted at Experian can sit untouched at Equifax for years, which is why a real audit covers all three.
Step 1: Pull all three reports free
Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the only federally authorized free source. Save each as a dated PDF. Checking your own report never hurts your score.
Step 2: Lay them side by side
Compare section by section. Differences between bureaus are your best clues to errors.
Step 3: Audit personal information
Look for misspelled names, old addresses you never lived at, and wrong employers. These can signal mixed files or identity theft.
Step 4: Audit every account
For each tradeline check: open date, balance, credit limit, payment history, and status. Flag closed accounts shown open, missing limits (they inflate utilization), and late payments you didn't make.
Step 5: Audit collections and negatives
Check the date of first delinquency. Most negatives must drop off after 7 years. A newer date from a debt buyer is re-aging, a violation of FCRA §605(c). Also watch for the same debt listed twice.
Step 6: Audit inquiries
Hard inquiries stay 2 years. Any you didn't authorize can be disputed.
Step 7: Build your dispute list
Rank errors by damage and dispute one per letter. Re-pull all three reports after 90 days.
